This workshop targets learning outcomes for Essential Standards Essential Standards 5.P.1 Understand force, motion and the relationship between them. Find out what makes the world go around in an entertaining introduction to the basic concepts of forces. Sir Isaac Newton would be proud when young scientists investigate his law of inertia. Children experiment with timed launches and measured distance travelled. Gyroscopes, bike wheels, and toy racetracks reveal the concepts of precession and centripetal force. Children leave with a thirst for physics along with their very own spring things.
This workshop targets learning outcomes for Essential Standards 5.L.2: Understand the interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystem. Exploring Ecosystems brings children into the amazing animal kingdom and beyond! Children learn about diverse, astounding creatures on earth as they experiment with camouflage and get hands-on with real tooth and claw replicas. They will delve into different types of ecosystems where animals, plants, and other life forms coexist. Children will also look at the different purposes organisms serve as producers, consumers and decomposers. They will finish up class by dissecting the circle of life in action: an owl pellet!
This workshop targets learning outcomes for Essential Standards Essential Standards 5.E.1: Understand weather patterns and phenomena, making connections to the weather in a particular place and time. Children get weather-wise in this climate-controlled class! A demonstration using air pressure helps students understand that air is made up of matter and children discover how air affects weather. Children try out tools that meteorologists use to measure weather and see how weather affects their environment. They discuss global weather patterns and make a colorful hurricane. Children take home their own Insta-Snow – fun in any season!
What’s the Matter
This workshop targets learning outcomes for Essential Standards Essential Standards 5.P.2: Understand the interactions of matter and energy and the changes that occur. Students will be introduced to the water cycle and get to see evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation and runoff in action. They will create a chemical reaction to see how it affects the sum weight of the parts involved. They will use different chemicals to create a fun new substance to take home.
This workshop targets learning outcomes for Essential Standards 5.L.1: Understand how structures and systems of organisms (to include the human body) perform functions necessary for life. In this class, children learn about the major body systems in the human body. They will simulate human digestion, see how a lung works, and look at blood typing while exploring the circulatory system. Students will identify the different systems in the body including the skeletal, muscular nervous and digestive systems. They will also look at the different bones in the skeletal system. Finally, students will create model single cell organisms to see how these are able to function.
